The Sephiroth Effect -Scyppend by ~kyokyo08:iconkyokyo08:

I was born, created, to kill. I was not to love, to think, to understand. I was to kill my creator's enemies, even if it meant I myself would be destroyed in the process. That was my duty. That was the sole purpose of my existence.

It was easy to log into the computer system that stored and hid away the records of those created under The Sephiroth Effect; a secret project named after the narcissistic SOLDIER who created it. Sephiroth had many enemies, most of which he could easily outthink, outmaneuver, and kill himself. However, under sheer numbers alone, Sephiroth was vulnerable. A small yet deadly group of people were rising against him, hindering him from fulfilling his goals. Sephiroth understood the theories behind the Jenova Project and how scientists had injected their subjects with Jenova Cells to morph them into the perfect weapons. Sephiroth could take this practice and push it to it's upmost limits. Instead of taking naturally born human beings and injecting them with his own cells, Sephiroth would create a being from scratch. He knew he could do this. He had the ability, the resources, and the sheer determination to do this. He would create the perfect weapon; carefully molded to meet HIS standards. He would hinder their ability to love, to think for themselves. He would alter their DNA to the point to where they would be mindless husks; puppets he could manipulate and control. Should these subjects succeed in their tasks, he would then dismantle and discard them. After all, Sephiroth only needed them to kill the pests, nothing more. To let them live when he no longer has any need for them would be a waste.

The database had been accessed and the files were being loaded. The first specimen and his records came to view.

Project Alpha: Codename Genesis
Subject Status: Terminated

Terminated. That was the only description given about Genesis. He had been destroyed after proven to be a failed attempt at human engineering. Sephiroth had forced Project Alpha to undergo a series of tests, all of which would end in his demise should he fail. Genesis had begun just as Sephiroth had planned. He had been quick, precise, unyielding. Still, he could not last long. His endurance was weak; his ability to think to dodge attacks was next to non-existent. Sephiroth had dismantled his failed experiment after realizing this.

Very well, Sephiroth would have to allow his specimens to think for themselves. He would keep it limited, of course, so that they would not begin to question why they were killing someone they've never met before.

Project Beta: Codename Angeal
Subject Status: Terminated

Angeal had been just as powerful as his predecessor, only had the same fatal flaws. He was too slow to react to attacks, too unthinking. Sephiroth made more adjustments. Time was running out; he needed to create a perfect weapon soon.

Project Delta: Codename Zack
Subject Status: Terminated

Zack had been absolutely perfect. Quick on his feet and quick to react, Zack had been a great success. He only had one flaw, it seemed, to Sephiroth, and that was his appearance. He looked too much like a soldier, someone who was out to kill. The specimen could smile, yes, and looked friendly when doing so, but he could only keep up this façade for so long. When his mission began, all smiles disappeared and he struck lethally. He had passed his tests with flying colors, and Sephiroth planned on sending him after Tifa, one of the pests he had yet to destroy. However, Tifa never traveled alone. She was always with Cloud, the one man Sephiroth could not defeat. Sephiroth knew that his specimen would most likely crumble if he did not provide his puppet with a companion. Sephiroth set to work.

He would create a woman this time. She would be beautiful and would appear gentle, docile. He would provide her with the ability to analyze a situation and adapt to the environment accordingly. He would provide her with the ability to morph into her attack form using a device known as a Sphere Grid. When inactivated, Yuna would appear to be completely harmless. When she was doing a mission, however, she could activate her Sphere and morph into a more agile, trigger-happy specimen. This way Cloud would not suspect her of wanting to murder him, for she won't have the need to carry an obvious weapon. Zack would accompany her and help her grow. Sephiroth could not afford any more failures. She would have to be the last, and therefore would have to be the most powerful.

Project Omega: Codename Yuna
Subject Status: Incomplete

Sephiroth had included a way to keep track of his specimens so he could analyze them for future projects. The data to Project Omega, Yuna, had become corrupt. A manual update would be needed. The computer uploaded all of Omega's existing files on her to determine what had become of her.

I was born, created, to kill. I was not to love, to think, to understand. I was to kill my creator's enemies, even if it meant I myself would be destroyed in the process. That was my duty. That was the sole purpose of my existence. I understood that more than anyone. I couldn't understand why. I couldn't comprehend why my life's purpose revolved around killing complete strangers who had done nothing wrong to me.

Zack had trained me. Sephiroth, my creator, told me to pay careful attention to Zack and his lessons on fighting and on defending. He said my existence depended on it. I was eager to learn from my instructor. He always smiled that glorious smile for me and was patient with me. It was difficult to understand how such a loving creature could become so vicious and violent when we began our first mission.

When we dove from the helicopter together and rushed through the church doors, I was well aware that my own opponent, Cloud, was nowhere to be seen. Only the female warrior, Tifa, was there, and she did not look pleased to see us. It was as if she had been expecting us. Zack insisted that I stay back; she was not my target, not my objective.
I watched as my Zack attacked the poor girl with no mercy. I knew she was powerful, but compared to Zack, she may as well had been an unarmed child. I could not understand why we were attacking her. What had she done? What had been her crime? I stood in horror, unable to move, at the site of this...this...mindless violence. I couldn't take it any more.

Zack hurled Tifa's damaged body into the ground. His smile seemed unnatural, twisted. It was the smile of a potential murderer. I knew Zack didn't have to be this way. I didn't want to watch him fall down this bloody and ignorant path. I quickly grabbed his shoulder when he advanced to finish the mission and end the poor girl's life. He seemed confused at first. I shook my head in silence, hoping he would understand. I watched as his confused brow unwrinkled and his evil smile dissolved as understanding poured in. I took his hand, my heart beating faster. This was not the life for us. We had the right to say no to stupidity, to blindly following orders even if it meant our own destruction in the end. Sephiroth was our creator; without him we would never have existed. But what existence was this? No, we were still human. We had a choice. I was glad Zack realized this before he journeyed down a path from which he could never return.
Sadly, our newfound resolve could not, would not, go unnoticed.

Sephiroth had always kept track of his specimens and recorded our missions through various video feeds. It was only a matter of time before Sephiroth learned of our failure. Not long after the failed mission we were standing in front of our own creator. We knew better than to run, he would have found us anyway. Instead we chose to face our fate, whatever it may be, head on.

"You failed me." He muttered.

Zack and I both shook our heads. "We're not going to do this anymore." Our minds had been made up.

Sephiroth merely grinned. His grin was one that always sent shivers down my spine. It was the smile of a madman, of evil. "You should have thought about that more." He hissed, tapping at his temple mockingly,  and slowly unsheathed his weapon. He was going to dismantle us. We were failed experiments to him.

I quickly turned as Zack unsheathed his own weapon. "I'm sorry Yuna." He whispered. I could merely watch while fighting tears. I knew what he meant.

The fight began before my mind could register what was happening. The sight of violence was frightening to me, I absolutely loathed it. I was paralyzed. I couldn't lift my hands to activate my Sphere and help Zack. I was absolutely worthless. Even when he was struck down by Sephiroth, his blood forming a pool around his body, I could do nothing. Sephiroth saw this, he knew his most powerful experiment had also been his weakest. His blade sliced through me with cold, deadly grace. He had walked away and left us to die as the rain began to wash away our blood before I had even hit the ground.

I had been created to kill, to hate my targets, to love only the sound of Sephiroth's voice as he gave me orders to end an innocent life. I couldn't bring myself to be that way. I was more willing to die in the cold muddy ground with someone I loved than to live only to murder someone I never knew.

The video became staticky and died away. The footage had been corrupted. Whether or not Omega and Delta had survived was left unknown.

Manual update required

The file for Omega was re-opened.

Subject status:

I smiled as I typed in 'Terminated'. Better for Sephiroth to think we were dead. This way he could not overshadow us. We could be free. I turned and smiled to Zack, who replied with his own loving smile. We understood. Zack and I turned and left our past lives behind, there was nothing left in these cold, lifeless walls left for us. We were created to hate, to kill, and to die when we had finished our objectives. Still, we were human. We possessed free will. We possessed another side. Zack and I chose to live; we chose to love.
